Professor Tor Iorapuu

Executive Director of Youth, Adolescence, Reflection and Action Centre (YARAC), Nigeria

Tor Iorapuu is the Executive Director of the Youth, Adolescence, Reflection and Action Centre (YARAC) in Northern Nigeria. This region is characterized by religious and ethnic tensions. YARAC is working with youth to promote tolerance and democracy. Tor is also a professor of Applied and Social Theatre at the University of Jos. He combines teaching with grassroots activism and has over 20 years of experience mobilizing and building grassroots youth networks in Nigeria.

At YARAC, he uses tools of empowerment and change, such as community organizing, Theatre for Development (TfD), and sports (Soccer for Democracy) for peacebuilding. YARAC’s work with grassroots movements has contributed to giving voice to those who helped bring in a democratic regime in the last elections.

One of Tor’s most successful stories to date is his work connecting Christian and Muslim Youth in the Plateau State to promote tolerance and address the religious and multicultural challenges in Nigeria. His current focus is on organizing communities in the face of political and religious conflicts that are weakening Nigeria's young democracy.

Ary Régis

Director General of Sosyete Animasyon Kominikasyon Sosyal (SAKS), Haiti

Ary Régis became involved early on with pastoral social care through the Eucharistic Youth Movement (EYM) and Misyon Alfa, a literacy campaign of the Catholic Church. Later, during his eight-year stay in Mexico doing his undergraduate and graduate studies in social communications and educational technology at UAM-Xochimilco University, he gained experience working with grassroots and indigenous community radio stations, as well as by way of the 1992  World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters Conference in Cuernavaca.

In 1995, as he was beginning to train young professionals in the communications field at the State University of Haiti’s Faculty of Social Sciences, he came in contact with the SAKS Popular and Community Radio Stations movement, a freshly minted institution created by committed Christians as a tributary of the Haitian Catholic Church’s Radio Solèy. Two years later, he returned permanently to Haiti and dedicated himself to teaching communications.
He became part of SAKS first as a member of its general assembly and then of the executive board (1998-2004). After sitting on the board from 2004 to 2007, he became SAKS’ new director general in 2015.

Adyan works on fostering peace, social cohesion and spiritual solidarity between individuals and communities in Lebanon and the Middle East. Mr. Itani is involved in Adyan’s “Citizens for Unity and Peace Project,” which is supported by Development and Peace. This project provides training workshops to youth of different backgrounds to help them to analyze political and religious divides that are created by sectarianism and to value inclusiveness and diversity in society. These youth then in turn provide awareness sessions in a various communities and regions of Lebanon and in the region.

Mr. Itani has a passion for intercultural and interfaith dialogue that began at a very young age, which led him to complete a diploma in interfaith studies in 2007. Since then, he has volunteered with multiple organizations working on interfaith dialogue, conflict transformation and notions of inclusive citizenship.  In 2012, he completed his Masters in Communication and was a member of the core team that developed the “Let’s Talk” tool which is aimed at developing skills on conflict transformation.  He is currently working on adapting this tool towards addressing conflicts between refugees and their host communities.

Mr. Itani is also the co-author of the academic paper “The Role of NGOs in tackling Extremism and Sectarianism in Lebanon: Track Two Diplomacy and Good Governance,” which was published by the Middle East Review of Public Administration.
