Development and Peace aids victims of the Iraqi crisis

August 29, 2014

Thanks to a $1 million contribution from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, Development and Peace is pleased to announce its support to displaced Iraqis in collaboration with Caritas Iraq and Catholic Relief Services. Development and Peace will also be assisting Iraqi refugees in Istanbul with a $50,000 grant to Caritas Turkey.

The offensive by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has resulted in the displacement of 1.2 million people in central and northern Iraq since January 2014. A number of Iraqi minorities are among the internally displaced, including Christians and Yazidis who have been systematically driven from their towns and villages by the jihadist. At this point, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that roughly 1.5 million Iraqis need urgent humanitarian aid.

Development and Peace’s project with Caritas Iraq and Catholic Relief Services is designed to respond to the needs of internally displaced families by providing food, drinking water, shelter, and household necessities. Development and Peace’s partners’ interventions are particularly adept at meeting the needs of children victimized by the conflict.

At the same time, Caritas Turkey is providing direct support to 300 Iraqi refugee families in Istanbul that have fled the conflict in their homeland. It is meeting their food and non-food requirements, while ensuring access much-needed medical care for 70 families. It is also helping refugee families access the health and other services to which they are entitled.

“We are very relieved to receive this contribution from the Canadian Government, which enables us to provide urgent and substantial support to displaced people that have lost everything.

We are doing everything in our power to monitor the situation in the North of Iraq in collaboration with Caritas Iraq and Catholic Relief Services and we expect to adjust our program to ensure that we are meeting the immediate needs identified by the local people. Our goal is to help them regain the ability to manage their own lives“, added Gilio Brunelli, Director of Development and Peace’s International Programs Department.
