Earthquake in the Philippines: Development and Peace supports the victims

October 28, 2013

A violent earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter Scale shook Bohol Island in the Philippines on October 15, 2013. The quake and its numerous aftershocks struck the central region of Visayas, killing nearly 200 people and affecting over three million more. The most impacted regions remain very difficult to reach for those attempting to provide humanitarian assistance.
Development and Peace granted $50,000 to its long-time partner NASSA-Caritas Philippines so that it might immediately address the needs of those affected by the powerful tremors that jolted the island. Working in conjunction with the dioceses of Tagbilaran and Talibon, NASSA-Caritas Philippines has distributed temporary shelters, food, and various urgently needed items to 21,750 individual victims (4,350 households) in some of the most affected and least accessible locations, i.e. the municipalities of Maribojoc, Inabanga, Carmen, Danao and Sagbayan.

The quake has caused widespread damage and the collapse of numerous buildings, including hospitals, schools, and heritage churches. Most national roadways and bridges have also been destroyed, thus hampering the delivery of assistance. In fact, certain areas, such as Maribojoc and Loon, can only be reached by motorcycle or boat. “The short-term priority is to provide temporary shelters for thousands of isolated individuals who have been terrorized by multiple aftershocks and have had to seek refuge in evacuation centres or under makeshift tents. We are keeping a close watch on the situation as it unfolds and are in constant touch with our partner,” reports Dominique Godbout, Emergency Relief Program Officer at Development and Peace.

Development and Peace is accepting donations, which will be allocated to its emergency relief program for the Philippines.
