Flood victims in the Philippines receive support from Development and Peace

August 14, 2012
Flooding in the Philippines has displaced thousands

Development and Peace is supporting local organizations in the Philippines to bring aid to flood victims there. Heavy rains in the capital Manila and surrounding areas have submerged entire communities, causing the death of over 100 people and the displacement of close to 3 million people. The rains have also caused major disruptions to local activities and serious damage to thousands of houses and infrastructure.

Development and Peace is working in and around Manila with its local partners Caritas Philippines (locally known as NASSA), Urban Poor Associates (UPA) and the Center for Environmental Concern (CEC) to respond to the needs of those who have been forced from their homes. Nearly 500,000 people have taken refuge in evacuation centres, while another estimated 1.1 million are being hosted by family or friends.

“The majority of the families in the evacuation centres have houses that are submerged right now,” says Father Edwin Gariguez, Executive Director of NASSA. “They expect to stay at the centres for weeks or even months while their houses are still under water.”

Development and Peace’s local partners will be responding to the extensive needs created by this natural disaster through the distribution of food and non-food items, ensuring access to safe drinking water and looking after hygiene and sanitation concerns. Families will also need support in fixing and cleaning their homes, which may have suffered extensive damage from the rains.

Development and Peace is accepting donations from the Canadian public to help people affected by the flooding.
