Our Program

Since 1991, Development and Peace has provided regular support for its partners in Zambia as they implement projects related to strengthening women's associations and Zambian rural organizations.

Zambia

Zambians have long resisted the introduction of genetically-modified seeds into their country. In 2002, thanks to advocacy by Development and Peace and its partners, the government prohibited the entry of GM maize into the country.

In recent years, the concentration of international assistance in urban areas has made intervention in the rural setting a priority. Development and Peace is therefore primarily active in rural areas of the country while supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening democracy and good governance.

The situation

Located in southern Africa, Zambia is a landlocked country which shares its borders with eight other nations. The country holds six percent of global copper reserves and is the fourth largest copper producer in the world. Zambia is one of the most stable nations in the region but is faced with severe poverty affecting over sixty percent of its population despite steady economic growth hovering at around seven percent.

One of the country's challenges is to fairly distribute income derived from the exploitation of natural resources. In order to strengthen democratic governance, its people have repeatedly called for a revision of the constitution in order to address issues related to decentralization, transparency and accountability.

The landscapes in Zambia are unbelievable! Today, we are on our way to Livingstone, known for the famous and powerful Victoria Falls. I’m so thankful to our Zambian friend, Andrew Simpasa, a Jesuit seminarian, for his kindness, his happiness and his time and energy to bring us to visit this amazing wonder of the world. I have never seen someone so proud of his country!

On Canada Day, we drove to the mining town of Mufilira with Development and Peace’s partner JCTR Kitwe. We shared some of our national pride with our Zambian friends by singing them Oh Canada. The pride that I held onto was challenged many times throughout our very eye-opening visit that day.

Wastage of public resources should never be allowed to continue, says the Jesuit Center for Theological Reflection (JCTR) to the new elected government in Zambia in a press statement issued last week. “In a poor country like Zambia where poverty levels are as high as 63% and the incidence of rural poverty as high as 78%,” says Sydney Mwansa, Programme Officer in the Economic Equity and Development Programme of the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR), “every ngwee counts and should therefore be collected and spent for the intended purpose and beneficiaries.”
