Ask the Prime Minister of Canada to act for peace in Syria

In Syria, millions of civilians are struggling to survive through the conflict.

Since the war began during the Arab Spring in Syria in 2011, more than 470,000 people have lost their lives and 13.5 million people are in need of humanitarian aid. More than a third of these people are confined in besieged or difficult-to-reach regions and are trying to survive in extremely precarious conditions, without reliable access to humanitarian aid. In addition, 6.5 million people are displaced within the country. Displaced persons often have to flee their homes and leave everything behind, and are then forced to move again as the fighting spreads.

Since the beginning of the conflict, over four million people have fled Syria to seek refuge in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. Some have been displaced several times within Syria before crossing the border and have exhausted the resources they had to survive. These refugees include some 1.7 million children.

Faced with what the UN describes as “the greatest humanitarian challenge of our time,” we cannot remain passive. Take action now and sign our petition calling on the Canadian government to do everything in its power to protect civilians in Syria and to end the conflict through diplomatic means.

I, the undersigned resident of Canada, am asking the Canadian government to do everything in its power to:

  • Strengthen Canada’s diplomatic role to contribute to finding a lasting peace through political rather than military means, and bring the voice of Syrian civil society to the negotiating table;
  • Ensure access to humanitarian aid so that it can reach the most vulnerable people in Syria, and ensure that civilians are protected; and
  • Promote both social cohesion and self-sufficiency among Syrian refugees and their host populations in neighbouring countries through the implementation of inclusive projects to ensure that people can provide for themselves and their families.
