March 8th is International Women’s Day!

In honour of International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8th all across the planet, Development and Peace wants to highlight the contribution made by millions of women as they strive to create a more just world. Women, for instance, are crucial players for achieving food sovereignty. In developing countries, 79 percent of women on the labour market work in the agricultural sector, yet they have less access than men to credit, markets, technology and agricultural services. By providing women peasant farmers with more resources, the number of individuals suffering from hunger world-wide could be reduced by 100 to 150 million people.*

Development and Peace’s programs aim to ensure that men and women enjoy the same rights, have access to the same possibilities, and receive equal recognition for their respective contributions to society.

To mark International Women’s Day, the Caritas Internationalis confederation – of which Development and Peace is the Canadian member – and the Fidel Götz Foundation are unveiling the Women Sowers of Development Prize to honour women seeking solutions to the problem of global hunger. Building a just and fair society is only possible if women take their rightful place in it!

Let’s work together to build a more just world!
