Honduras: Protecting a precious water source threatened by a dam

July 4, 2014
by
Mary Durran, Latin America Programs Officer

The small town of San Francisco is nestled between the blue cloud-wrapped mountains and verdant tropical forests of the Pico Bonito National Park, and the sultry fruit-producing plains of the northern Atlantic coast of Honduras. A former banana plantation that borders the park has been replaced by pineapples for export. It is a community where no one goes hungry – even the stray dogs and cats look well-fed – but healthcare is precarious and jobs are few. Many youth have migrated to the US in search of opportunities.

Raphael Yimga Tatchi, Africa Programs Officer

More than a decade after a horrifying civil war ravaged Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002, leading to the death of 120,000 people and the mutilation of thousands of civilians, this small country in Western Africa of 6.3 million people, is courageously rebuilding itself. Since peace accords were signed in 2002, there have been two presidential elections, in 2007 and in 2012, and successive governments have put in place a variety of policies, programs, initiatives and reforms in several sectors in an attempt to meet the challenges facing the country.

Still 200,000 people without a real home

January 10, 2014
by
Gilio Brunelli, Directeur of International Programs

On the eve of the fourth anniversary of the earthquake that struck Haiti, there are neither particular preparations nor special expectations in the streets of Port-au-Prince. There are no plans on the part of civil society, and there are only rumours that the government will organize something to commemorate this sad event. But three days before the fateful moment, we still do not know what the nature or scope of this “thing” will be. Nobody has the heart for it anyway.

Syria Crisis: Caritas Centre providing essential needs to Syrian refugees in Jordan

November 25, 2013
by
Guy Des Aulniers, Programs Officer for Syria

When I arrived at the Caritas Centre in Irbid, Jordan, there was a queue of about a hundred people waiting to register. Most are Syrians who have fled the civil war in their country, but there are also Palestinians forced to evacuate their refugee camp in Syria’s capital Damascus due to bombings. Why are so many waiting in line?
