On October 4th pray for peace in Syria

Pray for peace in Syria

As war rages on in Syria, shattering lives, destroying childhoods and denying people of their dignity, we must continue to give hope to the people of Syria through our love, prayers and solidarity.

As part of the Syria: Peace is Possible campaign, Development and Peace is inviting Catholics and all people of good faith to pray for peace in Syria on the Feast of St. Francis on October 4th.

The reasons to pray are many, as we are reminded daily of the dangers and tragedies experienced by Syrians.

Most recently, aid convoys attempting to reach the city of Aleppo, where people have not received aid in weeks, were attacked, causing the death of an aid worker and 20 civilians, and preventing food, water and other critical supplies from reaching those most in need. This led to the collapse of a truce between the United States and Russia to halt air strikes, which would have safeguarded the delivery of aid and alleviated some of the suffering of the people of Aleppo. In addition, an air raid killed four medical workers in the Northern Syrian city.

This is not forgetting the close to 5 million Syrian refugees who have fled their homeland, have been separated from their loved ones, and lost their homes. These refugees face poverty, discrimination, and insecurity in attempting to build new and peaceful lives.

Development and Peace reiterates its call to the Canadian government to do more for peace in Syria by focusing on these three points:

  • Contribute to the peace process and ensure that the voices of Syrian civil society are heard;
  • Ensure access to humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians; and
  • Promote social cohesion and self-sufficiency of refugees in neighbouring countries.

We must pray that our leaders here in Canada and around the world make all possible efforts to urgently negotiate a lasting peace agreement.

On October 4th, please show your solidarity with our Syrian sisters and brothers:
