Relief efforts supported by Development and Peace are making a difference in the lives of 3,643 families in Peru affected by torrential rains and flooding that took place in March 2017. Spring rainfalls produced 10 times the amount of water that is normally experienced at the time of year. The result was catastrophic landslides, which destroyed homes, buildings and roads, and severed access to community services such as water, food and medical care.
Development and Peace donors and members responded immediately to the crisis and $30,000 has been put towards ongoing relief efforts, which have helped 18, 215 people in seven of Peru’s departments: Ancash, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Piura, and Tumbes.
Thanks to these funds, our partner Caritas Peru has been able to provide these families with emergency food rations and drinkable water, via water purification systems and community canteens. They have also distributed hygiene kits and temporary shelters, as well as assuring access to medical and psychological services, including medication.
Development and Peace would like to express its profound gratitude to donors, who through their responsiveness and generosity, are helping affected families survive this crisis.
