August 23, 2018 - The state of Kerala in southwest India is currently experiencing its most violent monsoon in a century. Torrential rains have been beating down for several weeks, causing major flooding and landslides that have killed 389 people and displaced another 1.5 million people, who now find themselves in makeshift camps short of food and clean water. Houses in most villages are submerged, and agricultural activities have come to a halt.
Development and Peace has allocated $50,000 to provide rapid assistance to the most vulnerable and marginalized flood victims and to support its partner Caritas India, who is already on the ground helping those most affected. Food, basic necessities (including sheets, blankets, and mosquito nets) and hygiene kits (including soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and water purification tablets) will be provided to approximately 13,000 people in the districts of Allepey, Kottayam, Wayanad, Idukki, Pathanamtitta, and Ernakulam. In addition, assistance will be allocated to repair 450 homes and to restore the livelihoods of 1,250 people with small farms and small businesses.
Development and Peace is carefully monitoring the ever-changing situation and is in regular contact with its partner in the field.
